The UltraFit headset
The UltraFit headset was developed by Lorenzo Spreafico (Bozen/Bolzano University) and Anna Matosova (Freelance designer) in 2017. Articulate Instruments licensed the headset for sale that year, replacing the aluminium headset which had become obsolete. Feedback and requests from customers resulted in minor modifications to the headset over time. The UltraFit is carefully designed to be adjustable to fit a wide range of head sizes from the 5th female percentile to the 95th male percentile – and users, starting from children aged four. See Anna Matosova’s web page for a more complete description of the UltraFit design process. The stability of the headset has been assessed in a paper by M Pucher, N Klingler, J Luttenberger and L Spreafico Speech Communication Volume 123, October 2020, Pages 83-9 “Accuracy, recording interference, and articulatory quality of headsets for ultrasound recordings” and by J Balch-Tomes and A Wrench Ultrafest 2024 Improving ultrasound pose estimation accuracy by training on co-registered EMA data.
